Keeping man’s best friend healthy

You can usually tell if your dog is feeling a bit under the weather, they may seem a little lethargic or put off their food, but there are a few preventative measures you can take to help to keep your pooch as happy as possible.

Grooming your pet with a brush may seem something that only pedigree owners do at crufts, however brushing your dog regularly can help keep his cote free from knots and bugs if the comb is fine enough.

Check the nose for discoloration and scabbing as this could be a warning sign, a healthy nose however does not need to be cold or wet for it to be healthy, if in doubt its always best to seek professional advice from a vet.

Train your dog to stop barking

Dogs instinctively bark as part of their natural behaviour stemming back to when they used to roam in packs. This behaviour was a natural instinct to warn other pack members of pending danger, however in today’s society it’s not longer needed but is still an instinctive behaviour and is mainly due to stress or boredom. You can deter your dog from barking by reducing these two factors, such as taking your dog to the park for an hour or two each night will ensure not only your dog gets enough exercise but also keeps their attention on other things, so when your dog gets home he will have had enough stimulation and exercise to give you and your nabours a restful night’s sleep.

Help give dogs a happy home

The dogs trust is an organisation that takes in, looks after and rehomes dogs that have been abandoned, hurt or just unwanted. In most cases the dogs trust are able to rehome the dogs, which is great news as there are hundreds that need re-homing every day. However there are a select few that cannot be rehomed because of their current condition; this is where sponsoring a dog comes in. For a tiny amount each month, you can make a difference to the dogs lives and ensure they are well looked after.
